The International Congress on Cultures is promoted annually by a Network of Universities dedicated to the studies of Cultures that promote debates, research and the promotion of activities in the field of culture. The seventh edition of the congress has the theme “Reenchanting Cultures” and will be held on November 24, 25 and 26, 2021, in an online environment, as in the last edition, due to travel restrictions and public health protocols due to the pandemic of Covid-19.
The call for papers receives abstracts in Portuguese, Spanish, English or French in five Thematic Groups (GT) and artistic/cultural activities until September 30, 2021. The theme aims to discuss the numerous social, political, economic, communicational processes, technological and health that reverberate in the culture and are managed by it.
The Network is made up of universities in Brazil, Mozambique and Portugal, namely, the Federal University of Bahia, the University of Recôncavo da Bahia, the University of Zambeze, the University of Beira Interior and the University of Minho, respectively.
The seventh session of the Series of Talks and Round Tables “Interpellations based on The Silence of the Earth. (Post)colonial visualities intersected by Diamang’s archive” will take place on July 16, at 4 p.m.
The session “The Christian missions in the Portuguese colonies of Africa: submission and resistance to colonialism during the Estado Novo”, will count on the participation of Friar José Nunes and will be moderated by Moisés de Lemos Martins (CECS).
Friar José Nunes was born on September 3, 1956, in Lisbon. He did his novitiate in the Dominican Convent of Toulouse in 1976-77. Friar José Nunes made his first profession in the Order of Preachers in 1977 and was ordained a priest in 1984. After obtaining a doctorate in Pastoral Theology at the Pontifical University of Salamanca, he was a missionary in Angola for nine years. He began teaching at the Faculty of Theology of the Catholic University of Lisbon in 1994 and is a member of its board since 2002. He is parish vicar in the Parish of S. Domingos de Benfica, in Lisbon, since 1997 and from that year on, he has also been a member of the Prior Provincial of the Order of Preachers in Portugal.

The sixth session of the Series of Talks and Round Tables “Interpellations based on The Silence of the Earth. Over the 15th of June, the 1st Virtual Meeting – Six African Museums of Ethnology and Anthropology was held, bringing together museums from five Portuguese-speaking African countries, namely Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique and São Tomé and Príncipe. The Meeting aimed to promote dialogue between museum directors and technicians and researchers from the Cultures Past&Present project, with the presence of guests, as noted by researcher João Sarmento, co-organizer of the session with researchers Alda Costa and Catarina Simão.
Moisés de Lemos Martins, Director of the Center for Communication and Society Studies (CECS) and Principal Researcher for the Project Cultures Past&Present opened the work with a presentation on the Lusofonia Virtual Museum, which recently became the Academic Cultural Unit of the University of Minho, of which he is the director.
The event was divided into three thematic sessions, the first part “The creation of museums and their evolution” with moderation by Luís Cunha (ICS-UM/CRIA), the second with the theme “Current challenges” moderation by Alda Costa (UEM/CECS) and the third on “Future Projects” with moderation by Catarina Simão. Participated on behalf of the museums of the Ethnographic Museum of Praia, from Cape Verde, Samira Silva and Eugénia Alves; from the National Ethnographic Museum of Guinea-Bissau, Albano Mendes; from the National Museum of Anthropology of Angola, Álvaro Jorge; from the Regional Museum of Huíla, Angola, Soraia Santos; the National Museum of São Tomé and Príncipe, Manuel Lizarda; and from the National Museum of Ethnology of Nampula, Mozambique, Adriano Tepulo, Adolfo Norte, Antonio Ntimbanga and Maria Pascoela Tavares.
The Encounter was organized by Project Cultures Past&Present with support by Center for Communication and Society Studies, the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Minho, Eduardo Mondlane University, and supported by the Aga Khan Development Network and the Foundation for Science and Technology, FCT.

(Post)colonial visualities intersected by the Diamang archive” will be held on next friday, June 18, at 3 p.m. The session “Unity and Struggle: What has been, what is left?”, will have the participation of Aurora Almada (IHC/FCSH), Fabrício Rocha (CES), Vasco Martins (CES), Catarina Simão (artist, independent researcher and Culture Past & Present team), José Augusto Pereira (IHC/FCSH) and Raquel Ribeiro (University of Edinburgh). Ana Cristina Pereira holds a PhD in Cultural Studies, from the University of Minho, with the thesis ‘Alteridade e identidade na ficção cinematográfica em Portugal e em Moçambique’. She has as main research interests: racism, social identity, social representations and cultural memory in cinema, from a post-colonial and intersectional perspective, on which she has edited several scientific articles in national and international publications. She has been part of the team of scientific projects and, at the moment, she is an investigator of the (THE) OTHERING project. She is a member of the Non-Governmental Organization NARP-Núcleo Antirrista de Porto.
Kiluanje Liberdade (Director) Born in Benguela – Angola, in 1976, he lives between Braga and Luanda. Degree in Communication and Culture Sciences (2003). Postgraduate in African Studies, ISCTE (2005). Currently studying for a PhD in Cultural Studies at the University of Minho. Author of the documentary “O RAP É UMA ARMA”, First Prize for Best Documentary Work, at the Amascultura Documentary Encounters (1996). Co-author of 6 documentaries, in which “OUTROS BAIRROS” (1998), “OXALÁ CRESÇAM PITANGAS” (2004) and “LUANDA, A FÁBRICA DA MÚSICA” (2006) stand out. He was a television director for 9 years at TVZimbo (the first private television channel in Angola).
Rosa Cabecinhas is a professor in the Department of Communication Sciences at the Institute of Social Sciences and a researcher at the Center for Communication and Society Studies. She is director of the Doctoral Program in Cultural Studies at the University of Minho and coordinator of the Permanent Seminar on Communication and Diversity. She has developed interdisciplinary research and integrates several national and international associations in the areas of communication, psychology, education and cultural studies. His main research interests combine the areas of intercultural communication, social memory, social representations, social identities, social discrimination and diversity. The book Áfricas: mobilidade, violência, memória e criatividade, edited by the researcher and professor João Sarmento, it is one of the results of the Summer School “Áfricas. Mobility, violence, memory and creativity ”, organized by the Center for Studies in Communication and Society (CECS), Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Minho, in conjunction with the project“ Memories, cultures and identities: the past and the present of relationships intercultural experiences in Mozambique and Portugal ”(FCT / Aga Khan).
The Summer School, funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology, was held between July and October 2020, as a way of creating environments for discussion and interaction. The proposal had as its starting point four themes and objectives: to understand Africa as a continent of mobility; examine dimensions related to violence, poverty, terrorism and racism; focus on dimensions of the construction of memory, highlighting dimensions such as cinema, architecture and heritage; and to think about the creation process, reflecting on production and consumption strategies and daily lives, both in terms of imagery / symbolism.
Seeking to stimulate a multidisciplinary look from the social sciences, humanities and arts to, on and from the African continent, providing specific training on this territory, the Summer Course focused on training scholarship holders for critical thinking and for discussing strategies, methods, objects and research topics. Knowledge and skills have been developed that allow the design and continuation of autonomous research projects, allowing the scholarship holders to acquire research, analysis, interpretation and criticism skills from sources.
The book has the collaboration of several researchers from the Cultures Past & Present project, such as João Sarmento, Lurdes Macedo, Rosa Cabecinhas, Isabel Macedo, Sheila Khan and Vítor Sousa, in addition to professors from the Institute of Social Sciences, research and scientific initiation scholarship holders from the School of summer.
