The Project participates in the 2nd edition of the UMinho Prize for Initiation in Scientific Research

The presentations of the projects developed under the 2nd UMinho Prize for Initiation in Scientific Research were held on 12 November. Lara Campinho, 2nd-year student of the Degree in Sociology, at the Institute of Social Sciences, presented a poster resulting from the work entitled “Young people in the face of History: Images and narratives of interculturality in Portuguese and Mozambican school manuals”, developed with the scope of Cultures Past & Present project, coordinated by Moisés de Lemos Martins.

The project developed by the student, with the Cultures Past & Present project team, focused on the analysis of textbooks from Mozambique and Portugal. Lara took part in the initiative for the second time and shows interest in following the path of scientific research.

The UMinho Prize for Initiation in Scientific Research was created with the aim of providing an opportunity to bring students, from the 1st cycle and the first three years of integrated Masters, closer to real contexts of scientific research and insertion in research teams that they work on creating new and relevant knowledge by engaging them in supervised research activities that foster their interest in science.

The presentations were held at the Pedagogical Complex 1, on the Campus de Gualtar, at the University of Minho.

Review Permanent Seminar for Research and Community dedicated to the Cultures Past & Present project

The Permanent Seminar for Research and Community (SPIC) took place on October 20, at the Education Auditorium, dedicated to the Cultures Past &Present project. “History, Media and Education: action research in Mozambique and Portugal” was the theme of this SPIC, which included the participation of Augusto Alberto, Armindo Armando, Marlene Vanessa Jamal, from the Zambeze University, and Alice Balbé, from the Centro de Estudos de Communication and Society (CECS) of the University of Minho. The session was moderated by Rosa Cabecinhas, a researcher at CECS and co-ordinator of the project. The session can be watched here.

The Permanent Seminar for Research and Community aims to share and debate with the community the work developed by CECS researchers, make the results of the different platforms of the center public, as well as discuss and enhance future networks of joint work.

This event was a joint activity of the Permanent Seminar on Research and Community and the Permanent Seminar on Communication and Diversity.

Seminar “History, Media and Education: research-action in Mozambique and Portugal” on October 20

The next Permanent Seminar for Research and Community (SPIC) will be dedicated to the Cultures Past & Present project and will take place on October 20, at 2:30 pm, in the Education Auditorium (Campus de Gualtar), at the University of Minho.

“History, Media and Education: action research in Mozambique and Portugal” is the theme of this SPIC, which includes the participation of Armindo Armando, Marlene Vanessa Jamal and Augusto Alberto, from the Zambeze University, and Alice Balbé, from the Center for Communication and Society Studies (CECS) at the University of Minho. The session will be moderated by Rosa Cabecinhas, a researcher at CECS and co-coordinator of the project.

This event is a joint activity of the Permanent Seminar on Research and Community and the Permanent Seminar on Communication and Diversity.

Armindo Armando – PhD candidate in Language, Culture and Society at the Zambezi University, he is a Lecturer at the Alberto Chipande University, in Beira, Mozambique.

Augusto Alberto – PhD candidate in Language, Culture and Society at the Zambezi University, he is a Lecturer at the Licungo University, in Beira, Mozambique.

Marlene Vanessa Jamal, PhD student in Language, Culture and Society at Zambezi University, is a Lecturer at Licungo University, in Quelimane, Mozambique.

Alice Balbé – PhD in Communication Sciences at the University of Minho and is a Post-Doctoral researcher at Communication and Society Research Centre under the Cultures Past &Present project.

Rosa Cabecinhas is an Associate Professor at the Department of Communication Sciences, Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Minho, a researcher at Communication and Society Research Centre. Currently, and co-PI of the Cultures Past & Present project.

The deadline for submission of proposals for the VII International Congress on Cultures extended

The call for proposals for the VII International Congress on Cultures was extended until October 10, 2021. Papers can be submitted in the form of a Working Group or in the Artistic and Cultural Activities mobility. Under the theme “Reenchanting Cultures”, the seventh edition of the Congress will take place on November 24, 25 and 26, 2021, through the portal, again online, due to the conditions imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The event is promoted by the International Network for Studies on Cultures, integrating universities from Brazil, Mozambique and Portugal, with the aim of discussing the numerous social, political, economic, communicational, technological and health processes that affect culture and that are managed by it.

Project supports the 8th MICAR – International Anti-Racist Film Festival

The International Anti-Racist Film Festival is promoted by SOS Racism, which has organized the only film exhibition of its kind in Portugal since 2014 in the city of Porto, the MICAR. The event has the support of the Porto City Council and Teatro Municipal Rivoli, where the exhibitions are held, and this year, the Cultures Past & Present project joins institutional partnerships in supporting the organization of the event.

The 8th edition of MICAR will be held from 8 to 10 October 2021, at Teatro Rivoli, Porto – Portugal. Admission is free to all movies and events.

The event’s program includes the exhibition of cinematographic works that focus on the theme of racism, immigration and ethnic minorities, and an exhibition of posters. During the three days of the event, it is also possible to follow debates in various sessions on the topic addressed with the participation of guests

Call for the VII International Congress on Cultures

The International Congress on Cultures is promoted annually by a Network of Universities dedicated to the studies of Cultures that promote debates, research and the promotion of activities in the field of culture. The seventh edition of the congress has the theme “Reenchanting Cultures” and will be held on November 24, 25 and 26, 2021, in an online environment, as in the last edition, due to travel restrictions and public health protocols due to the pandemic of Covid-19.

The call for papers receives abstracts in Portuguese, Spanish, English or French in five Thematic Groups (GT) and artistic/cultural activities until September 30, 2021. The theme aims to discuss the numerous social, political, economic, communicational processes, technological and health that reverberate in the culture and are managed by it.

The Network is made up of universities in Brazil, Mozambique and Portugal, namely, the Federal University of Bahia, the University of Recôncavo da Bahia, the University of Zambeze, the University of Beira Interior and the University of Minho, respectively.

Session 7- “Christian missions in the Portuguese colonies of Africa”- “The Silence of the Earth”

The seventh session of the Series of Talks and Round Tables “Interpellations based on The Silence of the Earth. (Post)colonial visualities intersected by Diamang’s archive” will take place on July 16, at 4 p.m.

The session “The Christian missions in the Portuguese colonies of Africa: submission and resistance to colonialism during the Estado Novo”, will count on the participation of Friar José Nunes and will be moderated by Moisés de Lemos Martins (CECS).

Friar José Nunes was born on September 3, 1956, in Lisbon. He did his novitiate in the Dominican Convent of Toulouse in 1976-77. Friar José Nunes made his first profession in the Order of Preachers in 1977 and was ordained a priest in 1984. After obtaining a doctorate in Pastoral Theology at the Pontifical University of Salamanca, he was a missionary in Angola for nine years. He began teaching at the Faculty of Theology of the Catholic University of Lisbon in 1994 and is a member of its board since 2002. He is parish vicar in the Parish of S. Domingos de Benfica, in Lisbon, since 1997 and from that year on, he has also been a member of the Prior Provincial of the Order of Preachers in Portugal.

The cycle is organized by the Landscapes, Heritage and Territory Laboratory (Lab2PT), by the Center for Communication and Society Studies (CECS), by the Interdisciplinary Center for Social Sciences (CICS. NOVA.UMinho), by the Center for Research Network in Anthropology (CRIA-UMinho) and by the Cultures Past & Present Project.

Session 6: Crossings: Literature, Collection and Museums – The Silence of the Earth

The sixth session of the Series of Talks and Round Tables “Interpellations based on The Silence of the Earth. (Post)colonial visualities intersected by Diamang’s archive” will take place on June 25, at 3h00 p.m. The session “Crossings: Literature, Collection and Museums“ will include the participation of Alda Costa (Universidade Eduardo Mondlane/CECS), Lurdes Macedo (Universidade Lusófona/CECS), Mateus Pereira (ICS-Universidade de Lisboa), Branca das Neves (escritora angolana), José Luís Mendonça (escritor e jornalista) e Roberto Vecchi (Universidade de Bolonha). The session will be moderated by Luís Cunha (ICS-UM/CRIA) & João Sarmento (ICS-UM/CECS).

The session will be held in a hybrid format: face-to-face in the Sala de Atos, in ICS, and online on Zoom and on Facebook.

The Series of Talks and Round Tables comprises 7 sessions, between May 14th and June 25th, each subordinate to a particular theme, namely: archives, speeches and languages; work: domination and resistance; race and gender; emancipatory movements; culture and interactions; cinematographic languages: aesthetics and politics (2 sessions).

The Project CulturesPast&Present promoted Encounter (Virtual) Six African Museums of Ethnology and Anthropology

Over the 15th of June, the 1st Virtual Meeting – Six African Museums of Ethnology and Anthropology was held, bringing together museums from five Portuguese-speaking African countries, namely Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique and São Tomé and Príncipe. The Meeting aimed to promote dialogue between museum directors and technicians and researchers from the Cultures Past&Present project, with the presence of guests, as noted by researcher João Sarmento, co-organizer of the session with researchers Alda Costa and Catarina Simão.

Moisés de Lemos Martins, Director of the Center for Communication and Society Studies (CECS) and Principal Researcher for the Project Cultures Past&Present opened the work with a presentation on the Lusofonia Virtual Museum, which recently became the Academic Cultural Unit of the University of Minho, of which he is the director.

The event was divided into three thematic sessions, the first part “The creation of museums and their evolution” with moderation by Luís Cunha (ICS-UM/CRIA), the second with the theme “Current challenges” moderation by Alda Costa (UEM/CECS) and the third on “Future Projects” with moderation by Catarina Simão. Participated on behalf of the museums of the Ethnographic Museum of Praia, from Cape Verde, Samira Silva and Eugénia Alves; from the National Ethnographic Museum of Guinea-Bissau, Albano Mendes; from the National Museum of Anthropology of Angola, Álvaro Jorge; from the Regional Museum of Huíla, Angola, Soraia Santos; the National Museum of São Tomé and Príncipe, Manuel Lizarda; and from the National Museum of Ethnology of Nampula, Mozambique, Adriano Tepulo, Adolfo Norte, Antonio Ntimbanga and Maria Pascoela Tavares.

The Encounter was organized by Project Cultures Past&Present with support by Center for Communication and Society Studies, the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Minho, Eduardo Mondlane University, and supported by the Aga Khan Development Network and the Foundation for Science and Technology, FCT.

Session 3: “Work, domination and resistance” on May 28 – Series of Talks and Round Tables “Silence of the Earth”

On Friday, May 28, will be held the third session of the Series of Talks and Round Tables “Interpellations from the Silence of the Earth. (Post) colonial visualities intersected by the Diamang archive ” starting at 3 pm. Entitled “Work, domination and resistance”, the session will be held in a hybrid format (face-to-face and online) and will include the participation of José Carlos Venâncio (CECS/UMINHO, Universidade da Beira Interior, Portugal), José Pedro Monteiro (CES, Universidade de Coimbra, Portugal), Maciel Santos (CEAUP, Faculdade de Letras da Universidade do Porto, Portugal) e Paulo de Carvalho (Universidade Agostinho Neto, Angola), moderated by Fernando Bessa (CICS.NOVA. UMinho) and Sheila Khan (CECS). The cycle includes 7 sessions, between May 14th and June 25th, on Fridays, at 3pm – 6pm, each one subordinate to a particular problem.

The third session will take place in the Main Hall/Salão Nobre of the Rectory of the University of Minho, on Zoom and YouTube.
